School-Community Partnerships

Springwood SHS has a strong ethos of community engagement to help support, encourage, inform and build long lasting partnerships to enhance the learning of our students. The school has engaged the local community to run programs including:

• Beacon Foundation (linking with local community businesses and employment opportunities for students)

• Boxing Confidence for Trainer’s (Dundee’s Boxing and Fitness, West End)

• Rowing Program (Inspire Health Services, LaTrobe University, AIS and QLD Rowing)

• Deep Blue Program (PCYC)

• Sponsorship of scholarships, sporting teams and programs from (QLD Law Group Springwood, Dundee’s Boxing and Premium Finance Services)

• Partner Primary  School partnerships (Springwood Central, Springwood Rd, Chatswood Hills, Shailer and Kimberley Park)

Parent and Families are recognised as integral members of the school community and partners in their children’s education.

Regular contact with parents is made through a number of means including parent teacher interviews, teacher and administration initiated phone calls and snippets (positive behaviour acknowledgement postcards), inclusion of parents in special presentations and productions run by the school. This includes drama productions, sports and special awards and extracurricular activities (sport, art, drama and automotive trade nights etc)

Partnerships are established to address student needs and operate by providing access to experiences, support and intellectual or physical resources not available within the school through a number of different programs.

Success Program:

Through the Success Program students have been given the opportunity build resiliency, sense of purpose, self-discipline and improve their attendance data by being a part of the Boxing Confidence for Trainers program run in partnership with Dundee’s Boxing and Fitness at West End. Students travel to the gym on a weekly basis and are involved in learning boxing skills as well as personal trainer’s skills to work with clients in the future.

A number of other students are also involved in the Rowing Program where students with low attendance or behaviour issues were supported. Through the program, with the support or urban rowing, Inspire rowing, LaTrobe University and the AIS students have been able to build positive attitudes towards school, building resiliency and therefor improving their behaviour and attendance at school.

University partnerships:

Griffith University Partnership Program (formalised partnership)– ongoing relationship formalised 5 years ago and providing professional development  for staff, scholarships for students, campus tours, careers programs for junior students, transition and study programs for senior students e.g UNIREACH, True Colours. All partners are committed to the common purpose and goals of partnership activities

With the introduction of the school community panel a shared vision and direction between the school and community has been strengthened and continue to develop as the panel grows in experience.

The school and community also share the attitude that all students deserve an education and with the provision of specialist programs and classes we are providing students with every opportunity to achieve their desired course after school.

Procedures are in place to ensure effective communication and to monitor and evaluate the intended impacts of the school’s partnerships.
